The History of Craps

The origin of Craps can be traced back to England. People in England had played a game called Hazard, which involved two dice, before the 14th century. Players had to pick any number between five and nine and roll the dice. The goal was to throw the selected number. However, throwing a number outside the mentioned numbers (4-9) meant players had a chance to win if they threw the same number on the next try.

Craps was later taken to France, where it was named Crapaud, meaning toad, in French. This was due to the “toad” posture the players adopted when playing. The game was often played in the streets, with the dice being thrown on a wall. It was later taken to America, where it was named Craps, a couple of rules were added, and others changed. This is the version of craps being played in casinos today.

How to Play Craps – Rules

Like any other casino game, this game also has its rules. The rules of craps are generally simple. They are repeated in several rounds. The player will make a pass or don’t pass wager and roll the dice, known as the “come out”. The gambler can win or lose the “come out” bet, depending on the wager. Otherwise, the point is set.

The point refers to the number the shooter rolls, which must be rolled before the round is over. For example, if a shooter rolls a 9, he must roll another 8 to win. But if they roll a 7 before making the point, then they lose. From there, the dice are passed to the right for the next player to roll their “come out”.

The Different Types of Craps Bets

There are a few different types of craps bets.

They include:

The Pass Line  This is the most popular craps bet. This bet involves betting on the dice shooter to succeed. If they do, you win. On the other hand, if they lose, you get the point. You get even money when you place a pass bet, making it a low-payout bet. For example, if you put in Ksh500, you make a profit of Ksh500 if you win. The layout of the craps table is the same for all its online versions, so you should be able to find the pass line easily.

Don’t Pass The don’t pass bet roots against the shooter. So, if the shooter makes a roll of 7 or 11, it loses. If the roll is a 2 or 3, it wins. If the player rolling the dice throws a 12, it’s a draw. The opposite applies if a point is made. If the player throws a 7 before the point, you win. If a point is rolled before a 7, you lose.

Odds  This bet does not have a house edge, which makes it one of the most popular. However, you can only make this bet if you already have one in place. For example, if you have already made a don’t pass bet or pass bet, you can proceed to place the odds bet. So that’s how casino operators get you – you have to make a bet that favors the house first.

Come  A come bet is more like a pass bet, but you can make it anytime and it’s restricted to the non-come-out roll. Once a 7 has been rolled or a point made, you can place the come bet. To win a come bet, you need to roll a 7 or 11 as the first roll after making the come bet. You can also win by making a point for rolling a 7.

Don’t come – The don’t come bet is the opposite of the come bet. You can only make it on non-come-out rolls and you have to bet that the shooter loses the come bet. To win this bet, the shooter should roll a 2, 3, or 12 on the first roll. Also when the shooter rolls 7 before a point is made.

Place Now if you need a 2, 3, or 12 to lose a come-out roll and a 7 or 11 to win. This means all the remaining numbers are point numbers. This bet involves wagering on the point number. For instance, if a 6 is rolled, a place bet can be made on any or all of the numbers: 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10.

Buy  The buy bet is more like the place bet, except it has a caveat whereby a casino charges a commission. You can only make this bet on a single number, and you’ll be required to pay a commission on top of your bet to get fair odds. If you want to make a buy bet when playing online, it’s important to learn how to navigate to this. In most cases, the buy-get button is usually placed on the left side of your screen.

Best and Worst Bets in Craps

To beat the house at craps, you need to know which bets to make and which ones to avoid.

Here is the list:

  • Always make the come, don’t come, pass, and don’t pass bets.
  • Instead of the Big 6 and Big 8, always wager the 6 and 8. You’ll only be paid even money on the Big 6 and Big 8.
  • Avoid field bets. They come with a high house edge of 5.55%.
  • Play craps at casinos that offer good odds. The house edge for casinos that offer double odds is significantly reduced.

Craps Glossary

Here are some of the most widely used Craps lingo:

  • Advantages – The edge the casino operator has over a player.
  • Action – Bets that are active on the table.
  • Big 8 – A wager where an 8 will be rolled before a 7.
  • Big 6 – A wager where a 6 will be rolled before a 7.
  • Dealer – A person who controls the game and assists players.
  • Hot table – When shooters are playing without “sevening” out.
  • Outside numbers – Refers to numbers 4, 5, 9 & 10.
  • Parlay – Adding winning to your initial bet to increase your bet amount.
  • Seven out – Rolling a 7 before the point number and after a point has been made.
  • Shooter – The player rolls the dice.

Tips and Winning Strategies

Increase your winning chances by following these tips and strategies:

Be consistent – Like other aspects of life, consistency always bears fruits. Craps is one of the casino games that require a great deal of persistence and a holistic approach.

Know when to quit – Many craps players don’t know when to leave regardless of whether they’re winning or losing. The best thing to do is set a limit on your gambling sessions. This way, you can leave whenever the time is up. This is the best way to reduce your losses when things are not going your way and to secure profits when they have accumulated.

Manage your bankroll – This is a basic rule for all gamblers. Always set aside money for gambling that you can afford to lose. Don’t use money meant for your children’s school fees or rent to play craps. Once you exhaust your bankroll, call it a day.

Understand the house edge – Like other casino games, craps payout less than winning odds. In craps, the house edge for come and pass bets is the same (1.4%), while that for don’t pass and don’t come bets is (1.6%). Odds bets don’t have a house edge. The payout for the odds bet is the same as its winning odds. You can reduce the game’s house edge by laying odds on top of your pass, come, don’t pass, or don’t come bets.

Ignore dealers’ recommended bets – The dealer works for the casino, and he would obviously try to recommend some bets. To remain on the safer side, ignore them and try to make your own bets.

Conclusion

Craps is one of the most entertaining casino games. The rules and gameplay may seem challenging to master, but once you do, you’ll enjoy the game. Apart from learning how to play, choose the best casino in Kenya where you can play craps.
